Chapter 4, See Ya Simon

Hello, This term my class is reading a book called See Ya Simon. This book is about a kid in year 10 named Simon who has muscular dystrophy which is a sickness which causes your arms and legs to not work to the point where you die. We are up to chapter 4 and for each chapter we have to answer different questions about what happened in the chapter.

Chapter Four
What is the name  of the role playing game Simon and his friends were playing?  The lair of the white wolf

What did Nathan say he looked like in photos?
Nathan said that he looked one of the identikit people from the crime watch tv program.

Why did Mrs Shaw think Simon had trouble walking when he was little? Because his mum used to smoke before he was born so she thought that caused him to have trouble walking.

How did Simon feel about his parents looking after him all the time? Simon felt like he was always with them and that was never private.

How would you feel if you were Simon? Why? If i was simon i would be a bit sad because i would know that i am weak and that i'm going to die soon.

How often do Simon’s parents go out? Simon's parents go out every second Thursday evening.

Summary of Chapter Four:

In chapter 4 Simon was starting to get annoyed about always being at home with people and that he felt like he was always having to be watched and that he wanted his mum and dad to be able to have a life of their own without having to worry about simon, so his mum and dad got a babysitter and  going out every second Thursday evening. Simon and his friends always play this roleplaying game where they pretend to be different characters. Later in the chapter they were explaining how Simon has a shower and that he has to be sitting down and that he lays on the floor to get dressed and undressed. Simon had also said that he hates looking back at the photos from when he was younger and he refuses to look at them because he probably doesn’t want to see how much more frail and weak he has goten.

Life In lockdown

Hello, a few days ago we had to write a story about our lockdown. For this task we had to write our lockdown experience in paragraphs to make it more interesting. Here is my lockdown writing

Life in lockdown

As lockdown started I was so excited since there would be no school. I would wake up every morning dreading that I had to do online school and join calls all day. A few weeks into lockdown I started getting very bored so I decided to start baking things. I would make things like cookies and cupcakes. Since it was my brother's birthday during lockdown I decided I would make him a chocolate cake. His cake cake had blue icing and lots of sprinkles. I would also help my mum cook dinners and lunches. During the lockdown my dad decided to get a lot done in the garden and paddocks, since he didn't have to work. I would help him by helping paint and organise the garage and a shed, moving the cows and spreading the fertilizer.

During lockdown I would go on walks with my parents to fill in time. We always did this loop which took about an hour to walk. One evening I was walking with my mum and we came across this lost ginger, fluffy kitten. The kitten looked to be around 5 months old. We put a post on facebook asking if it belonged to anybody but nobody replied. We walked to every house down my road to see if it was their kitten but nobody claimed ‘her’. The next morning we took her into the vet to see if she was under anybody's name but she wasn’t so we decided to keep her.

Well at the time we thought it was a girl but once we took it to the vet I was disappointed to have been told it was a boy.

Although lockdown was a bit boring it was good to get away from school even though towards the end I missed school and my friends.

Narrative

It was a cold, misty morning, as I woke up I looked out my bedroom window thinking it would be a good day to go for a morning walk with some friends. slowly I put my hiking jacket and my boots on and started to walk outside to the forest. The forest wasn’t far from my house so I could just walk there. I got to the large forest, It was dark and gloomy. I could hear the leaves crunching and crackling underneath my feet as I walked. My friends sent me a message saying they aren’t far away. A few minutes passed and I started to get worried about where they were.

Shmuels Diary entry

For the past few weeks we have been reading the boy in the striped pajamas. Since one of the characters is Shmuel we had to write a diary entry about his life so far at Out-with. Here is the diary entry I made for Shmuel.

Dear diary, I have been at outwith for a long time now, im beginning to hate it now. I always like to sit by the fence and look at the other side of my camp to get away for a while but if I get caught I would be in lots of trouble. I met this kid named Bruno who lives on the other side of the camp. He seems to know absolutely nothing about the camp. He just doesn’t understand what we have to go through. His dad is a commandant which he believes does nothing wrong but he is torturing us. I'm always scared that I'm going to get caught over here and be gassed. I just hope that Bruno won't tell his dad that I'm at the fence.

Narrative

Hello for the past few weeks we have been doing narrative writing. First we watched a video clip then we followed on the video by writing a narrative. Our narrative could only be 200 words long.

The mountain dirt road

“Breaking news: 20 people found dead on Cliff Road in the past 2 days. One of the officers on the case has been on the case for a few hours tracking fingerprints”  The officer reports a man in a red mask, goggles, and a black suit walking around.

Peter walked up to the man and flashed his badge. "I have a few questions for you," the officer said.  The officer asked Riley the questions and he went to his car to write it down. As he is writing it down in the car Riley starts running to the nearest gas station

Riley gets to the gas station but acts naturally. Karen thinks Riley looks suspicious so she calls him up to see what he's doing because he has been in there for almost an hour just wandering around. Riley takes off his red mask and Karen asks many questions which annoys Riley so he shoots her and runs outside.

Then Riley ran out and started running to the cake shop. When he got into the cake shop he put on his red mask. Mark looks at him suspiciously because he saw on the news that someone in a red mask has been on the scene of the crashes. He looks at the pictures of his newspaper and it looks like him. Mark also sees that there has been a report of Karen dead in the newspaper. Mark decides that Riley is the person who killed Karen and the people off Cliff Road so Mark shoots Riley.

Enlargements

This week in maths we have been doing enlargements. Enlargements are where you have a small image and you make it bigger. First we had to pick what we want to enlarge. Then we worked out a grid on how big your squares are and how many you need. For my first enlargement I chose to draw Piglet. Once I finished my first one I had to colour it in then I chose to do another one which I chose to do Elmo.  To draw the enlargements we had to draw go square by square so everything is in the right place. I enlarged Elmo by 4 and Piglet by 8. This was a fun task but it took a while to complete.

Explanation writing

This week we have been working on explanatory sentences. Explantory sentences are where you explain something. First we had to pick a topic I chose what causes earthquakes. We had to write 3 paragraphs an introduction and conclusion. Before we did this we had to pick some household appliances so we know how to write them.

What causes Earthquakes

  -Introduction

An earthquake is a violent shaking of the ground that causes damage or for structures to fall down. Earthquakes are mainly caused by the tectonic plates underground moving or even crashing together. Earthquakes are also caused by the geologic faults or even movement of magma in volcanic areas.

-How earthquakes start.

Earthquakes are caused by the tectonic plates moving in different directions, different speeds or sometimes even crashing together. When this happens it usually means it's an earthquake. Radioactive processes within earth's interior mostly causes the tectonic plates to move

-Magnitude

Magnitude is what measurement is used to determine how strong an earthquake is. Earthquakes are usually around 2-8 magnitude. If your earthquake is 8 magnitude it would be very strong and cause heavy damage. If your earthquake is 2 magnitude it would be barely felt and minor damage.

-How long they last

An earthquake typically only occurs for around 10-30 seconds although the longest earthquake has been around 8-10 minutes. The world's longest earthquake was on the 22nd of May 1960. The earthquake was 9.5 magnitude which is also one of the worlds strongest earthquake. This earthquake was in Valdivia, Chile. The earthquake had caused a tsunami which altogether killed an estimated 5,700 people. The biggest earthquake in New Zeland was in Wairarapa it was in 1855 and it was 8.2 magnitude. The second biggest magnitude earthquake in New Zeland was 7.8 they were recorded in Dusky Sound, Murchison, and Hawkes Bay and Kaikoura.

-Conclusion

In conclusion an earthquake starts by the tectonic plates moving underground. Earthquakes usually occur for around 10-30 seconds but in 1960 an earthquake lasted for 8-10 which killed 5,700 people. Earthquakes can happen in any kind of weather but if it's raining and your near water there will likely be a tsunami.

Last week in maths we were doing permimeter. If you don't know what perimeter is its basicly where you need to find how much fencing or something that you will need. If its a square or a rectangle shape first you will need to figure out how many metres, centermetres or kilometers it is. For an examle the sides are 4cm you would need to go 4+4+4+4 and that equals 12 so the answer would be 12.  I found this activity easy because I have done permieter before.
